          When Errors Are Not An Option

          Quick, accurate, and dependable methods to verify patient ID—and prevent surgical errors and adverse drug events—are the foundation of patient safety. Positive Patient ID (PPID) solutions, including bar coded patient wristbands and RFID technologies, are used by healthcare facilities to ensure accurate dispensing and administration of medications and blood products; track specimens and x-rays; manage medical equipment, assets, and files; help with charge capture, and more.

          PPID begins when registration staff at the front desk, in the emergency room, or specialty clinics print a bar coded wristband, and perhaps bar coded forms, for every incoming patient. The wristband may even include a patient’s color photograph.

          Scanning the bar code with a handheld device enables clinical staff to instantly access patient data, including identity information, reason for admission, medical history, prescribed medication, and allergies, in the hospital or pharmacy information system.

          Similarly RFID surgery verification systems use passive RFID technology to prevent wrong-patient, wrong-site, and wrong-procedure surgeries. A small RFID tag contains a patient’s demographic information and surgical procedure data to be verified twice by the surgeon before any procedure is performed.
