We needed to replace an outdated SOHO2 for our midsize business. The ASA 5505 was compared to similar products from Juniper, Watchguard, Fortinet and SonicWall. The competitors are focused on UTM, with hefty subscription and support fees; in many cases, you're bound to the UTM features to get the desired functionality.
In contrast, the ASA offers deep levels of configuration and security without the "fluff". This comes at a cost, however: administrative overhead. Setting up the device is nuts and bolts - if you're not familiar with Cisco firewall products, you'll end up referencing the support documentation frequently. And the documentation doesn't always do the best job of explaining features and settings.
