          Software-Defined WAN

Software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) applies software-defined networking technology to WAN connections. WAN connections are typically used to bridge connections throughout enterprise networks over geographic distances. Traditionally, these WAN connections had to be bridged with technology that required expensive proprietary hardware.

Today, with software-defined WAN, network functionality can be packaged as software and planted anywhere. Instead of a complex, manual configuration of connections, SD-WAN technology automates the configuration of your WAN routers, allowing you more flexibility with your network.

"Software-defined WAN enables organizations to deliver the connectivity users need with the scalability and automation IT departments want."

—Kevin O’Connor, Senior Director, Cloud Practice at Connection

          The Benefits of SD-WAN

An SD-WAN reduces complexity, adds flexibility, and lowers costs of maintaining WAN connections. The ideal construction for a WAN is to use broadband connectivity for everyday inter-office network traffic and reserve MPLS links for mission-critical needs. While you can configure a hybrid WAN manually, you end up with unnecessary complexity, which will only increase every time you have to reconfigure to keep up with ever-changing application and data demands. Instead of having to own and configure expensive hardware, you can provision connectivity and services through the cloud. Since you can adjust software-defined WAN connectivity through the cloud, you can easily scale connectivity up or down depending on user demand. And because SD-WAN enables the network to become a software stack, new security measures can be layered in via virtualization or VPNs, allowing you to strengthen the security of public broadband connections instead of paying more for private MPLS connections.

The technology is incredibly relevant for international organizations, enabling network optimization that aligns with the unique business needs of multinational companies. With a software-defined WAN, reliable connections, accelerated performance, and global reach and scale are now available.
