By combining capacity (100GB native, 200GB with 2:1 compression), performance, and reliability, this StorageSmart LTO Ultrium cartridge continues the IBM commitment to enhancing tape technology. It supports the Linear Tape-Open Cartridge Memory (LTO-CM) chip, enabling the IBM Ultrium drive to read and write to the data cartridge by using a radio frequency transmission. This chip allows fast, simultaneous transfer of cartridge-dependent data with IBM Ultrium drives during media load and unload cycles. This simultaneous exchange results in improved data access speeds by eliminating the need to read/write cartridge-dependent data from the media after it is loaded or before it is unloaded. Additional characteristics include a 2000 ft. tape length, long-length durability of 100 full file passes, short-length durability of 5000 load, unload, and initialization cycles, and an estimated archive life up to 30 years (signal decay of less than 5%).
